What Is BaZi? Four Pillars, Eight Characters, and Day Master Explained

A BaZi chart is a time-based symbolic structure. The calculation and the interpretation are separate steps, and a responsible reading should keep that distinction visible.

The short answer

BaZi (八字) means “Eight Characters.” Those characters are the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch assigned to the Year, Month, Day, and Hour of birth. Together they form the Four Pillars. The Day Stem is called the Day Master and acts as the chart’s reference point.

How four pillars become eight characters

Each pillar contains two symbols: one Heavenly Stem (天干) above one Earthly Branch (地支). Four pillars multiplied by two symbols produce the eight characters that give BaZi its name.

The pillars are not obtained by replacing a Gregorian date with a Chinese zodiac animal. A calculation engine must resolve calendar boundaries, solar terms, the day cycle, and the two-hour period used for the Hour Pillar. That is why a complete chart needs more than a birth year.

  • Year Pillar: the year-level stem and branch under the chosen BaZi year-boundary convention.
  • Month Pillar: determined through solar-term months, not ordinary Gregorian or lunar month numbers.
  • Day Pillar: the stem-branch pair for the resolved calendar day.
  • Hour Pillar: the pair for the resolved two-hour branch and its corresponding stem.

What the Day Master means

The Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is the Day Master (日主). It is the reference symbol used to describe relationships with the other stems and hidden stems in the chart. Those relationships are commonly grouped under the Ten Gods (十神).

The Day Master is not a personality score by itself. Its element and polarity describe a position inside the chart. Claims about strength, useful elements, career, wealth, or future events require additional interpretive rules and should not be inferred from a single symbol or a simple element count.

Visible stems, branches, and hidden stems

The four visible stems are only part of the structure. Each Earthly Branch can contain one or more Hidden Stems (藏干). These are traditional internal associations carried by the branch. A chart display may list them and show their Ten Gods relationship to the Day Master.

Counting visible and hidden occurrences can be descriptive, but frequency is not the same as strength or usefulness. Seasonal context, roots, combinations, clashes, and the interpretive tradition being followed can change how a practitioner evaluates the same chart.

Calculation is not the same as prediction

The chart calculation answers a reproducible question: which stem-branch pairs follow from the supplied birth data under a declared time and calendar convention? Interpretation is a separate layer that assigns traditional meaning to those relationships.

BaZi Days keeps the calculation receipt, structural facts, and plain-language reflection prompts separate. It does not present the chart as a scientifically validated personality test, medical assessment, financial forecast, or guarantee of life events.

What to check before comparing charts

Before comparing results from two websites, confirm that both used the same birth date, recorded time, birth location, timezone history, solar-time convention, solar-term data, and day-rollover rule. A visible difference may come from an input or convention difference rather than a calculation error.

If the birth time is unknown, use a tool that labels the chart as incomplete instead of silently inserting noon, midnight, or another default. The missing Hour Pillar should narrow the claims that can responsibly be made.
